In Her Business: Event Marketing - Pay Attention to the Details, But Get Help

Event marketing can be an effective way to engage directly with potential new customers. Meet Kathy Morgan, owner of Space Transitions, a Columbus, Ohio based space planning, custom storage and professional organizing business. In this post, Kathy shares what she learned from hosting her first onsite marketing event, Organize Columbus.

What inspired you to host an onsite event?
Despite all we do, my company's core value is to improve the organization in people's lives. My life was literally transformed when I discovered there was a way to live that did not involve wasting time looking for keys, paying late fees, etc. I felt "in control" for the first time in my life. I want others to know this feeling.
What was most challenging about putting together this event and how did you deal with it?
Thinking through all the details that go with having a successful event....everything from how you will market the event to being sure you have enough toilet paper in stock to handle the crowd! It's all about paying attention to the details, but also having a wonderful support staff. People like to help. Don't be afraid to ask for it, or tell them if you are overwhelmed and ask them to take part of the load. Once they do, let them do it their own way and don't be a control freak.
What advice do you have for other business owners as they develop new ways to market their businesses?
Look for ways to market yourself that involve giving something back and helping others to grow. One can never be satisfied to creep when they feel the impulse to soar! Give others the tools they need to soar and then just be a part of their ride. I got more leads at my own trade show than any show I did over this past year. If you are passionate about what you do, it's contagious.
